Echo, CVU Shut Out BFA St. Albans 3-0

Curt Echo pitched six scoreless innings to help CVU top BFA St. Albans 3-0.

Behind six scoreless innings from Curt Echo, the CVU baseball team beat BFA St. Albans 3-0 Tuesday afternoon. The Bobwhites’ loss was only their second of the season and the first time they were shut out by an opposing team.

“I was hitting my spots and my catcher did a great job,” said Echo. “I was happy with my curveball and got enough pop-ups and groundballs.” Echo allowed three hits in six innings of work.

Davis Mikell hit his third home run of the season in the second inning to put CVU (10-4) ahead 1-0. The Redhawks then added a run in the third inning when Ryan Machavern drove in Tucker Kohlasch on a sacrifice fly. Another sacrifice fly, this time by Timothy Jones, pushed the CVU lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning as Drew Nick scored from third base. Nick reached base in all three of his plate appearances, singling twice along with a walk.

BFA (12-2) had their best chance in the top of the seventh inning. Two baserunners reached to chase Echo from the game. Mikell came into pitch for CVU and struck out the next two batters before giving up a walk to Matt Palmer. With the bases loaded, Mikell was able to strike out Levi Martin and end the game.

After starting the season 1-3, CVU has won nine of their last ten games. The Redhawks are currently on a six-game win streak.

“In the last few weeks, we have buckled down and have brought more intensity,” Echo remarked.

“Our game plan coming in was to continue playing fundamental baseball,” said CVU baseball head coach Tim Albertson. “Curt mixed it up well and hit his spots today. He kept the fastball inside which kept the BFA hitters off balance. We need to stick with playing one game at a time. We will try to have our pitchers continue to go deep and put some runs on the board.”

Andrew Delaricheliere started for the Bobwhites and tossed a six-inning complete game in the loss.

CVU next plays Thursday at Colchester before finishing their regular season Friday vs. Milton. BFA concludes their regular season with games at Essex Wednesday and at Burlington on Thursday.
