Girls Hockey: BFA Tops Spaulding for Metro Title

The BFA Girls Hockey team repeats as Metro Division Champ

In the second girls hockey championship game at Gutterson Fieldhouse Monday night, BFA defeated Spaulding 2-0 to win the 2011 Metro Division title. The Comets title is their second straight, as they also knocked off Spaulding in last year’s championship game.

After a scoreless first period, BFA (15-6-1) took control with two goals early in the middle period. Senior Taylor Girard put the Comets on the board using an assist from Desiree Hurlbut. Just over a minute later, sophomore Tori Hubbard scored to double the BFA lead. Rachel Hubbard and Abbi Boomhoover assisted on the second Comets goal.

BFA goalie Shanley Howrigan finished with 13 saves in the game. The sophomore finished the postseason without allowing a single goal in any of BFA’s three wins. Spaulding’s sophomore goalie Gabbie Willey had 21 stops.

BFA Girls Hockey is now 8-1 all time in championship games. BFA has won eight of the ten years that the VPA has crowned a girls hockey champion. Spaulding won the only title not claimed by BFA in 2002.

The Spaulding loss was just their second loss of the year. The Tide finish their season with a 17-2-4 record. Spaulding has now lost in three straight finals appearances.
