On the first full day of winter, the South Burlington Rebels (2-0-1) were certainly anything but cold. In a 4-2 performance at Cairns Arena, the Rebels defended their unbeaten record and triumphed over the Missisquoi Thunderbirds (0-2-0).
It was a scoreless and evenly-matched first period with Rebel and Thunderbirds goalies, Courtney Barrett and Grace Metayer stopping a combined 13 shots on goal.
The second period heated up fast, with a Rebel goal by Anne-Marie Farmer 20 seconds after the faceoff. Missisquoi answered back seven and a half minutes later, with an unassisted goal from the stick of forward Mallory L’Esperance. The second period ended as it started – in a dead heat, 1-1.
In the third period, South Burlington made its move. Captain Molly Higgins scored two of the Rebels three goals in the period to help lead them to their second victory. The Thunderbirds’ Alexandra Dupont-Lawrence answered Higgins’ first goal with one 33 seconds later. Higgins’ second goal, with 5:52 left, put the Rebels ahead, where they remained for the rest of the game. South Burlington had a chance to add to their lead when the Thunderbirds received simultaneous roughing and cross-checking penalties. Down two players, Missisquoi showed key defensive play and killed the penalties. With time running out in the last period of play, Missisquoi pulled their goalie in favor of an extra attacker. The plan backfired when Rebel forward Julia Hudson scored on the empty net.
Barrett finished the game with 23 saves and Metayer finished with 15. Higgins finished with two goals and two assists.
On December 27th, South Burlington plays in a tournament in Middlebury at 2:00pm while Missisquoi travels to Burr & Burton to faceoff at 4:30pm.
