CVU and Hartford took to the ice Tuesday night in an epic defensive battle. Although the game finished 1-0, it sure had its heated moments.

The first period was scoreless, fast-paced, and riveting. One of Hartford’s many chances came off of a hard shot that was almost deflected in, but stopped by CVU senior goaltender, Emily Sackett. Hurricane goalie Brooke Harrington made nine key saves during the period.

CVU’s Sackett finished the night with 16 saves, while Hartford’s Brooke Harrington had a fantastic 28 saves to keep the score close.

The game’s lone goal was scored in the second period with 7:42 remaining by CVU’s Captain, Molly Howard. Helped by assists from fellow seniors Hannah Johnson and Amanda Armell, Howard launched a missile into the back of the net. From then on out, great defensive play from both sides kept the rest of the game scoreless.

The third period was illuminated by Hartford chances, snuffed out by Redhawk defense.  With 6:10 remaining and down by one, Hartford had a breakaway chance at tying the game. Sackett once again came through with another big stop, receiving a roar from her team and from the crowd. The Hurricanes had another chance during a late power-play, but once again timely CVU defense held the attack.

The Redhawks (3-1-0) will host Burr & Burton Thursday at home while the Hurricanes (3-1-1) will play January 5th at South Burlington. CVU and Hartford will finish their three game series (which is tied up 1-1, after Hartford won in their first meeting 3-2) January 10th at UVM’s Gutterson Field House.
