Girls Soccer: Rebels Complete Cinderella Run With State Title

South Burlington capped their amazing playoff run with a 2-1 win over Colchester Saturday to take home the Division I state title. The title is the first for the Rebels who were making their first appearance in a championship game since 1981.

South Burlington was able to strike first when freshman Shannon Flaherty found the net 33 minutes into the game. The Rebels doubled the lead when Jen Arnold converted a penalty kick opportunity in the second half.

Colchester’s Lauren Bernard cut the lead to 2-1 with a beautiful breakaway goal. Bernard used great ballhandling and great speed to bolt up the left side of the field and shoot into the top right corner of the goal. It was not enough though as the Rebels won their first ever state title.

“I am so happy right now. The win was a complete team effort, we worked really well together,” said Flaherty. “Our styles complimented each other out there. We all love each other so much.”

Colchester’s Haley Forkey had four saves as did South Burlington’s goalie, Amy Simendinger. The Lakers finish their season 10-5-3.
