Field Hockey: Semi-finals Preview

South Burlington hosts CVU on Wedneday in a D-I field hockey match-up

It is semi-final week in Vermont high school field hockey. Divisions II and III determine teams for their finals on Tuesday while Division I’s semi-finals match-ups will be played on Wednesday. All three finals will be played Saturday 11/6 at University of Vermont.

Division I Semi-finals:

(4) CVU at (1) South Burlington
(6) Middlebury at (2) Hartford

Undefeated South Burlington (15-0) will play host to CVU. The Rebels won easily 6-0 over Mt. Mansfield. The Rebels are led by star Ashley McDonald, who had a hat trick against the Cougars. The Redhawks advanced past Rutland 3-1 Saturday behind Louise Gibbs’s goal and 2 assists. The two teams met twice this year with SBHS winning 5-0 away and 2-0 at home.

The other undefeated D-I team, Hartford (14-0), will host Middlebury. Hartford stayed perfect by beating Colchester with goals from Kayla Thibodeau, Shelby Yee and Ashley Brown . The Middlebury upset over 3rd seeded Essex on Saturday was powered by Chrissy Ritter’s two goals.

Division II Semi-finals:

(5) Springfield at (1) Harwood

Top Seeded Harwood (11-1-3) is coming off an overtime battle with 9th seeded Mt. Abraham. Rebecca Hamel scored the goal for the Highlanders. Jill Rushton and Jessie Haskell scored for Springfield (8-5-2) as they upset Windsor.

Woodstock (12-2) is coming off a double overtime win against U-32. Camille Ertal contributed two goals and assisted on Courtney Mayhem’s game winning goal for the Wasps. They will face the winner of Milton at Otter Valley.

Division III Semi-finals:

(4) Montpelier at (1) Missisquoi
(3) Rice at (2) Stowe

The defending champs Rice (10-5) moved past St. Johnsbury 2-0 in the quarters. The Green Knights won with goals from Jenna Campbell and top scoring threat Jackie Spitler. They travel to Stowe (10-4-1) to face Maggie McGovern who scored two goals against North Country on the way to a 3-0 win. Stowe is 2-0 against Rice on the year with 2-1 and 1-0 wins back in September.

Top seed Missisquoi (11-3-1) looked impressive in a 7-1 win over Bellows Falls. Camille Rainville dominated with four goals and an assist for the Thunderbirds. They will play host to Montpelier (7-7-1) who is coming off a quarterfinal shutout of Fair Haven. Miranda Wigren had a hat trick in the Montpelier win.
