Garvey Young will not be suiting up for the University of Vermont Catamounts Men’s Basketball team next season.  The sophomore guard has decided to leave the team and is expected to transfer closer to home.  Young stated that he loved Burlington and Vermont but wanted to be closer to family in a phone interview with John Fantino of the Burlington Free Press.

“I love Vermont, I love the fans, I love Burlington, but I think being closer to home, closer to my family, being able to see my grandmother, is the main reason,” said Young, a Washington D.C. native. “It’s mostly personal reasons.” (quote Fantino Burlington Free Press)

The loss of Garvey Young will have a deep impact on the 2010-2011 Catamounts team who have already lost 3 other starters to graduation (Nick Vier, Marqus Blakely, and Maurice Joseph) and are in need of guards as they will have a roster heavy with big men next season.  Young was also the teams best one on one and perimeter defender garnering all-defensive team honors last season, and was key in defending the league’s best guards in the America East title run.

With the loss of Young, a scholarship will open up for the Catamounts, who have not yet determined how it will be filled.  There will be two players next season who will be with the team as walk-ons, Burlington’s Clancy Rugg who finished up a post graduate year at Northfield Mount Hermon, and Brendan Bald’s older brother Brad Bald who transferred in from UNC-Wilmington.  The spot will most likely be filled by an incoming recruit or transfer.
